Krups 54-Ounce Electric Kettles Review

I have used electric kettles for many years and they are the best way to boil water -- they are faster and more energy efficient than the stove-top kettle and you don't risk burning them when you forget that the kettle is on the stove. My old electric kettle died and I started looking for a new one.

An electric kettle is a simple device and could be made to last for many (i.e., at least greater than 10 years). Unfortunately, manufacturers are making things as cheaply as possible and charging premium prices. You will find as you read the reviews for most kettles that people complain about the quality of their construction and their correspondingly low life times.

An electric kettle should boil water quickly, should be easy to clean, should (in my opinion) be stainless steel throughout and should not have features that are obviously made to break. I don't mind if the kettle gets hot to the touch - I just use the handle to touch it just as I would a stove top kettle. This Krups kettle does boil water quickly and it is fairly easy to clean (and does get hot). This said it still has flaws.

1)The inside top inch(or so) of the kettle is made with plastic. The lid is also plastic and must be aligned just right before it will properly fit. Why couldn't the lid be stainless steel and just fit on in any direction as with most stove-top kettles?
2)The lid also has a plastic mechanism for opening the plastic spout cover. This mechanism is annoying and is made in such a way that it will break in a few years leaving a spout that stays shut.
3)The water level indicators are made of plastic and run the length of the kettle on both sides (as you can see in the picture). Water levels are somewhat of a convenience if you don't want to open the lid and look in, but they are a weak spot in kettle design being a likely place for a leak to occur. Other water level indicators trap water and create a good environment for mold to grow. The Krups design does not have that problem.
4)The base of the kettle is cheaply made. It is the standard Chinese 360 degree design. If you read reviews of kettles with this design you know that they fail after a few years. Pending failure shows itself when you have to rotate the kettle to get it to have an electric connection. Slowly the places that work are harder to find and finally it just stops working. That's what happened to my old kettle. This should not happen. The mechanism is very simple and should be able to last forever. I checked with Krups and they want almost forty dollars for a new base if the one you have stops working (it's part number 620029, if you're looking for it).

My ideal kettle would be made of stainless steel, would have a hidden element, would be easy to clean, would have no water level indicator and would have a well built base and electrical connections that are not designed to fail in a few years. Anyone know of such a kettle in the US? (there are many like this in the UK). In the meantime I suggest that we all complain to the manufacturers and demand more for our money. If enough of us write to their customer "service" departments maybe they will pay attention. I would pay a lot of money for a well built kettle, but that's not what we are getting.

At almost $70 I think this kettle is overpriced and not sufficiently well-built to justify the price. I'll keep searching....

Hamilton Beach 40999 10-Cup Electric Stainless-Steel Teakettle Review

I looked at many electric tea kettles before purchasing this one. My intention was to find a fast way to brew tea without using my gas stove. I also wanted to avoid plastic, and this was attractive because the pot is stainless and the heat element is under the stainless and doesn't come in direct contact with the water. Alas the water level is plastic, too bad, could easily do without that level if there were level lines inside the pot.

Another reason I selected this was the possibility of making tea IN the pot, alas this is not the case. But the description of the mesh filter is a little misleading. The kettle cannot be used with loose tea. The point of the filter is to prevent any calcium deposits from pouring out with the water, but this isn't really necessary if you clean the pot as recommended. The filter is a little plastic one that slides into a slot inside where the spout hole is. The filter is removable though, and isn't needed to heat water.

On the plus side, the water heats fast. The directions say to boil water and throw out the first 2-3 kettles full plus rinse 2-3 more times. I did this and had to throw out the next kettle full because there was a strong unpleasant taste. After 4 boils though, the taste is gone.

When full, the kettle is heavy. If your hands are not strong, a shorter and wider pot rather than this tall one might be easier to lift and pour.

Heat element shuts off quickly, and the pot heats fast. Takes some getting used to, if you are accustomed to waiting awhile for your water to boil, you'll have to move more quickly because the water is boiled and done and the pot is off in no time.

Looks nice on the counter and the heat element is a round glass stand.

Great, will use and enjoy, but still am looking for the perfect tea kettle, preferably not made in China.

Chef's Choice 685 International Deluxe Cordless Electric Teakettle Review

I had one of these for almost six years and used it on a daily basis (not just for making tea, but also for boiling water quickly for other uses, i.e. food preparation).It always looked great and was a pleasure to use, but one day it stopped working.So I went online and looked at all of the kettles currently available.I thought about trying a different brand, but all of the other stainless steel kettles (I wasn't interested in plastic) had something I didn't like about them -- an awkwardly placed handle, an exposed element, etc.In the Chef's Choice kettle the element is hidden, so the interior of the kettle is easy to clean (it pretty much doesn't have to be cleaned at all, since only water is ever put in the kettle), and if the element gets covered in scale, I don't know about it (Chef's Choice does recommend occasionally "decalcifying" the kettle by boiling some white vinegar in it -- I never did this with my first kettle and I wonder if this eventually led to it malfunctioning?).The handle doesn't extend over the opening of the kettle, so it is easy to fill, and the spout is truly dripless.And of course the cord is attached to the base, not the kettle itself, so there is no need to plug and unplug it when carrying the kettle to sink or table or stove or wherever.So I'm on my second Chef's Choice kettle and very happy with it so far.I'm the kind of person who doesn't go in for a lot of kitchen gadgets, and I don't like using electric/electronic items when a manual or mechanical one will do, but I definitely recommend an electric kettle because it is energy-saving, fast, and won't boil dry (if you forget about it) or annoy you with a whistle (when you're busy doing something else).

UPDATE: (June 2008)My second one of these has just stopped working.I still love the design of this kettle, and maybe 5-6 years is not a bad lifespan, but . . . I think I might give the Breville kettle a try this time.Will report back!

Cuisinart KUA-17 1-3/4-Quart Cordless Automatic Electric Kettle Review

I moved to the U.S from the U.K 5 years ago and my first task was to find an electric kettle. I was amazed to see how rare they were and it took a while to track one down.(I was without a computer for a while, so maybe that was why}. I found a great looking one in this product, but was very dissappointed when it died early after 1 1/2 years. I got another one thinking it was just bad luck, but lo and behold. It has just died again of the same problem. The connection on the base gives up. First it will work if you spin it round on the base until the light goes on, but then it just has enough of that andbecomes good for nothing. I won't be buying a 3rd. I am looking for a different brand now. For the price, I expected it to last longer than 2 years.

I have owned this tea kettle for five years and it has proven to be as good as other Alessi products. It is easy to clean, comes to a boil rather quickly and clicks off when done. Hamilton Beach Cool Touch Kettle - 40898 Review

I bought this kettle because I wanted one that was all stainless steel on the inside.With some of the cheaper electric kettles, God only knows what chemicals are leaching out of the plastic and into the water you're about to drink.Many of the reviews of the plastic hot pots even mention the plastic smell of the water after you heat it.This is why I spent the extra thirty dollars to get one that was all stainless steel.

Regarding the construction, the kettle is double-walled stainless steel with an air gap or other insulation in between.This keeps the outside from getting hot during and after heating the water.Another nice feature is that there isn't an exposed heating element inside the kettle, so you don't have to worry about minerals building up on it.The cover is well designed.You press a button on the cover itself and it installs onto two pivot points at the top of the kettle.There is a button on the top of the handle that you can press to either lock the cover closed, or open it so you can pour in the water.

I've only had the kettle a couple weeks, so I can't speak to its longevity, however I am amazed every time I use it just how fast it heats the water to boiling.

I use it in my cubicle at work and it's very quiet, although as the water approaches a boil, you can hear a simmering noise.It's nothing more than you get when you boil water on the stove, so that's to be expected.

I would encourage anyone who is interested in getting an electric kettle to buy this model.It seems to be a very well designed and manufactured product.

Dualit 72460 Cordless 12-Cup Jug Kettle, Chrome Review

The craftsmanship and finish on the stainless Dualit kettle are superior to all others. Unfortunately, the kettle has two major flaws, and the company has an even bigger flaw.

Kettle flaw #1: The cordless base is thin plastic and warps after several months of once-a-day use.

Kettle flaw #2: It's not a matter of 'if', but 'when' it will leak due to cracked plastic windows in the side of the kettle.The plastic windows are pressed into the side openings, which puts the plastic under stress. Repeated use of the kettle causes fine cracks in the plastic where the stresses are concentrated. I guarantee your kettle will leak from these fine stress/heat cracks after approximately 1 year of use.If you have any doubt, google (or any other search) for Dualit, leak, cracked plastic.

Company flaw: horrible warranty and they won't stand behind their product.I had to pay for a replacement cordless base when mine warped after a few months. This was annoying but not a show stopper at $19 with shipping, since the kettle was awesome. Then a few months later the windows began to leak, and Dualit had nothing to say except that there was no repair or replacement part available and they would be happy to sell me a replacement kettle.That seemed utterly ridiculous to me, especially at their prices.

For the $100 I paid for this thing, I could have bought and disposed of two to four of the competitor brand stainless kettles. My misunderstanding was that I assumed the Dualit was not a cheap (in quality, not price) disposable kettle.Do yourself a favor and do the internet search (Dualit, leak, cracked plastic) then, DO NOT buy one.

Bodum 10552-16US Ottoni Cordless 51-Ounce Electric Water Kettle Review

On the positive side, this is beautifully designed kettle and well constructed of stainless steel, which is what I was expecting after paying a whooping $179 for a kettle.
However if like me, you were willing to pay such a price for a mere kettle in the hope of having an all metal kettle with no plastic parts, you would be disappointed: the water level is metal; the filter is cheap plastic but it is removable; however the inside of the lid is a black plastic on which water condenses and this for me was unacceptable for this price range. I fail to understand manufacturers who can be so greedy on their profits so much so that they have to cut costs by substituting with cheap plastic even when asking for a premium price. Also kettle is made in China, so must not have cost Bodum half the asking price....For $50 I could find an all metal kettle with a few plastic points, so I had to return this kettle back. Not good enough, so until someone comes up with a kettle that takes into account the concerns of customers, I will have to wait and settle for a stovetop kettle...

Braun WK600 Impressions 7-Cup Electric Kettle, Brushed Stainless Steel Review

I was a little surprised at the price but found that it is worth it.It is built very sturdy and does what it was made to.The stainless steel looks great and is very sleek.One thing though... GETS VERY HOT, but as long as you use the handle you will be fine.I really like that it came with a filter in it and has the automatic turn off when it reaches the appropriate temperature.If you're willing to pay $69+ for a water heater you will not be disappointed.

Chef's Choice 688 SmartKettle Cordless 1-3/4-Quart Electric Kettle Review

So far, I am very pleased with my SmartKettle. It heats fast, it is pretty accurate, and it doesn't leave a funny taste in the water. With the fully adjustable temperature it works great for any kind of tea. It pours easily without spillage, and the top opens wide for easy cleaning.

There are a few things that keep me from giving it a perfect score though:

- There is no physical power off switch. There is a button to start/stop heating, but no physical switch to turn off the unit. You have to unplug it if you don't want to keep the BRIGHT display on 24/7. Not a big deal, but a power switch on the unit wouldn't have cost much and would have made it a bit more convenient.

- There is no way to adjust the volume of the alarm beeps. It can be a bit loud when brewing a cup at 5am.

- The minimum water level for safe brewing is supposed to be 16oz, I've found that you need to fill it closer to 32oz or the unit gives a low water level error and won't turn on. Again, not a big deal, just something to note.

Even with these minor quirks, it is still the best adjustable-temperature electric kettle that I have used.

****UPDATE****
After owning this kettle for 4 months, it began acting strangely. The thermometer would never reach 212 degrees, even though the water inside was clearly boiling. The temp reading would stop at 208, but the kettle was set for 212, so the water would just keep boiling. Eventually it would shut off with an error. I used it sparingly after this as it seemed like a potential hazard. After 3 more months it randomly caught on fire one day. It wasn't even in use at the time. Had I not been in the kitchen to hear the sparking and smell the smoke, I might not have a house right now. I will not be buying another.

****UPDATE 2****
I was contacted by a representative of Chef's Choice who assured me that this was a unique occurrence and not an accurate representation of the quality of their product. In fact, they asked that I send my unit back so they could investigate. They replaced my SmartKettle and the new unit is working perfectly so far. I feel a lot better about using the product now that I know the company stands behind the quality of their products, and will go out of their way to make things right for those who have had problems.

Krups BW4000 Professional 2-Quart Die-Cast Electric Kettle Review

When my beloved Braun electric kettle developed a small leak, I ordered this Krups model. Unfortunately,I had to return it. This kettle was far too heavy, even half filled with water, for my old hands and wrists. It is certainly built to last, and may be suitable for young strong users. However, a second drawback is that it did not heat water as fast as my Braun, while drawing slightly more power. Heating this cold heavy kettle seems to me to waste energy. Lest you think I am a shill for Braun, let me emphasize that Braun no longer makes my model, nor any comparable kettle. There are a few used, and one new one available but at a huge price - apparently, others value it as highly as I. Last note: the Krups base, not being round makes kettle placement on base less convenient. High quality but not for me.

Maxi-Matic EKT-6863 Elite Gourmet Stainless-Steel 1-2/3-Liter Cordless Water Kettle Review

What interested me in this kettle is the top bail handle. Only the Cuisinart cordless kettle has the same arrangement and it is way more money. Most others have side handles which makes it hard for those with carpal tunnel or arthritis to deal with when filled.Boils quickly, especially if you fill it with a few cups of water for coffee/tea/etc.

Although a tad noisy (all stainless kettles are), the auto shutoff is nice feature.The lit side switch pokes out and is a little curious. Given that decent carafes cost this much and more makes this a great addition to the kitchen.

Breville BKE820XL Variable Temperature Kettle Review

I am relatively new to the tea scene (my wife and I started drinking Teavana teas about a year ago) and as such I have been searching for a really good kettle. I wanted an electric kettle because of their ease of use as well as the extra features some of the nicer kettles offer. After an exhaustive search I decided upon the Breville SK500XL Ikon Stainless-Steel Electric Kettle based in no small part to the excellent reviews it has received on Amazon and other sites.

I went to a few stores to examine it in person and compare it to about ten other electric kettles that the different stores carried but nothing seemed to come close to the design and quality of the Breville. So after finally making my decision, it was simply a matter of time before I made my purchase. I am very glad I waited as within 2 weeks this new Breville kettle was released. While still substantially costlier than the SK500XL, the BKE820XL has a number of features and design improvements that made the extra cost more than worth it. These include:

- Multiple temperature settings (different teas require different temperature water for an optimally brew) with 20 minute hold
- Improved water level indicators now on both sides (the single water level indicator on the SK500XL is behind the handle which makes it hard to read)

I've only had my BKE820XL a few days (I purchased it from a local store) so I cannot speak to its long term reliability yet, if it is anything like the SK500XL, I don't expect to have any problems.

Oh yeah, and the tea I've made in the last few days is easily the best I've ever brewed! Yay!

UPDATE 1/2/2009: I've had the BKE820XL for over a month now and I still love it! The only thing I've found that I would critique is:

- After you are done boiling water for the day, you need to either dry out the lid by hand or leave the lid open for a few hours to let the water evaporate (from the lid where it collects). I am concerned that not doing this might lead to issues down the road.

Even with that, I am still overjoyed with my purchase (which I use at least 5 times a week) and highly recommend it to anyone in search of a quality electric kettle.

UPDATE 3/12/2009 - Nothing much to report except that my wife and I are continuing to use our kettle mutliple times a week and are extremely happy with it. It has a permanent place on our counter! :)

Chef's Choice M677SSG Cordless Electric Kettle-Stainless Steel Gray Review

I grew up in Europe with electric kettles so I think I know what to expect. I had to return the M677, as it took too long to turn off. I called their customer service and they said it should take an average of 12 seconds to turn off. The average for mine to click off was 1 minute and 15 seconds (timed only after coming to a vigorous boil with steam escaping). It didn't matter if it was full or not. Only once did it click off in less than one minute. Once I came downstairs and it was still boiling away, I was not sure for how long it was boiling so I decided to return it.

Giving them the benefit of the doubt (their customer service was good - a real human picked up in a few seconds), I replaced it with a model M678 which is a little larger, and its average click off time is 35 seconds. It still feels like it's too slow to click off and most of the time I flick it up manually, but at least I feel I can trust it to turn off if I leave the room. (My old dead Russell Hobbs would have switched off in 15 seconds, but I can't seem to find them anymore in the US at least.) On the other hand, the exra boiling time does mean the water if very hot; I would often bring the Russell Hobbs to a second boil so it would be hotter!

The M678 is a bit wobbly on its base, and wobbles a bit when its boiling, but the M677 was stable. All in all, the kettles look good but feels cheaply made with inconsistent quality control. But after scouring all the other reviews, it seems like these models were the best of the bunch.

At least I could count on Amazon to take back a defective product without any hassle. I'm glad I bought from them and not another vendor now (Amazon even reimbursed the shipping, which I didn't expect).

Hamilton Beach 10 Cup Electric Kettle Stainless Steel Review

Researched electric kettles no end without finding a good buy with good performance. Picked this one up at Costco, trusting in the return policy.

I've had no thought of returning it: Heats fast, and the hot water has no taste or smell. Base is light but stays put--it's no effort at all to set it on the base or lift it off.

Cons:

* The metal outside gets hot. Fortunately, you have no reason to touch it. The handle is large and comfortable and your knuckles are protected from accidental brushes, so the heat of the metal is not likely to matter.

* The trigger on the top of the handle opens the lid. A minor annoyance: this usually flings a few droplets of water about. If you use the trigger to open the lid just after boiling, though, those droplets will be very hot. Fortunately, there's no reason to do this unless you're starting another kettle-full just after finishing one. When you're pouring normally, you'll be pouring through the spout and the top needn't be open.
