Tea Kettle Review

Tea KettleHaving purchased the Presto electric tea kettle as a gift, I find that it indeed supports the standards set in the description of the product. It is indeed very quick to boil water although the cord is incredibly short. I very much recommend this product as it is well worth the low price.

Keurig B70 Platinum Single-Cup Home Brewing System Review

Keurig B70 Platinum Single-Cup Home Brewing SystemI recently purchased the new Keurig B-70 Gourmet Single Cup Home Brewing System that was released on October 1st, 2006 and have been very happy with it.The machine is extremely well designed, simple to operate, aesthetically pleasing, and most importantly, brews an excellent cup of coffee.I am very impressed with how quickly it is able to brew a cup of coffee, the selection of brew sizes, and how simple clean up is.

There are a variety of single cup brewers on the market now, many utilizing pre-packaged coffee "pods" for brewing.Personally I was not comfortable purchasing a product where I would be locked into the selection and pricing of a specific manufacturer, or one that would only brew coffee and not tea and cocoa. This is just one area where Keurig really shines above their competition.

Keurig has gathered support of a variety of gourmet coffee, tea, and cocoa manufacturers and there currently there are over 140 different types sold pre-packaged in K-Cups including Green Mountain, Diedrich, Gloria Jean's, Timothy's, Van Houtte, Tully's, Coffee People, Newman's Own, Celestial Seasonings, Bigelow, Twinings, and Ghirardelli. Not only is there a large selection to choose from, there are a variety of resellers online offering K-Cups, and pricing is extremely competitive.

In addition to the pre-packaged offerings, Keurig offers the My K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter allows you to use your own gourmet ground coffee in your Keurig home brewer. This option provided the extra level of comfort I personally needed to make the jump into a single cup brewer.Frankly I don't find myself using it very often as I had originally thought, as there are so many options available in pre-packaged K-cups.

The pricing of the Keurig brewers are extremely reasonable, and brews gourmet coffee in just a fraction of the cost of purchasing it from a Starbucks, Coffee People, or similar.I expect that my machine will pay for itself in savings in just a couple months of use.

The only suggestion I have for Keurig is that the My K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter be included with the sale of the brewer, and not an optional accessory. It is such an inexpensive accessory that I am surprised it was not included.Overall the Keurig brewers are excellent value and quality and would recommend them to anyone interested in a single cup brewer.

Ideal for both everyday use and for entertaining, this 1500-watt countertop appliance brews one fresh cup of gourmet coffee, tea, or hot cocoa at a time. Not only does the single-cup home-brewing system ensure the freshest results (no more bitter coffee sitting in a carafe, going more bitter and stale with each minute), but it also makes it possible to customize drinks, since one guest might prefer regular while another decaf or hot tea after dinner. The unit uses patented K-Cups, which offer over 200 varieties of pre-measured gourmet coffee, tea, and cocoa from a wide range of premium brands. It can also produce hot water for making hot cocoa from a packet or for use in cooking. When ready to brew, simply open the lid, insert a K-Cup, close the lid, and select a cup size from its one-touch control panel, which comes with a user-friendly blue backlit LCD display. Five brew-size options include a 3-1/4-ounce iced beverage, small 5-1/4-ounce cup, 7-1/4-ounce small mug, 9-1/4-ounce large mug, and an 11-1/4-ounce travel mug. After setting the digital clock, the unit can be programmed to turn on at a pre-determined time, which avoids having to wait the four minutes for it to heat up; it can also be set to turn off automatically from one to nine hours later for energy-saving convenience. The machine also allows for choosing the standard brew temperature from 187 degrees F to a hotter 192 degrees F. Other highlights include a blue-lit removable 60-ounce water reservoir (holds up to 10 cups), a descale indicator, a removable drip tray that allows for easy cleanup and the use of travel mugs, and dishwasher-safe parts (the K-cup holder and funnel). Housed in a sleek, award-winning design, the single-cup brewing system measures 13-4/5 by 10-2/7 by 13 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Bodum Chambord French Coffee Press Review

Bodum Chambord French Coffee PressOkay, to some the idea of using a French press coffee maker is a little too precious, bordering on snobbishness. I used to be in that boatuntil a few hours ago.Tonight on a whim, I purchased this Bodum French press. Now I should warn you readers that it is generally NOT a good idea to test out your shiny new french press when you are getting home at 10:30pm on a Monday after spending way too much money at Target when you just ran in to get "dog food".I write this review so heavily caffienated that I will probably stay up until dawn tonight re-organizing my closets or alphabetizing my CD collection or doing some other useless task.Despite being a dailycoffee drinker (of the muddy variety the office's Bunn machine churns out), one cup from the french press has knocked me into the stratosphere, and that alone is worth giving this product 5 stars.

My caffiene overdose aside, this press produces the best coffee I have ever had at home, and it truly rivals or surpasses coffee I've had at coffee houses. It's slightly more involved than using an automatic maker, but not difficult at all. The unit itself is pretty sturdy, and looks lovely.

French press coffee is a great alternative to using those smaller 1-2 cup automatic drip makers.Being single, I've gone through my share of those, and the coffee they make alway seems about ten times worse than the coffee from a normal-sized drip maker. If you like to make a large pot of coffee and drink it throughout the morning, I would suggest picking up a good quality carafe or thermos to keep the coffee warm.

Pros:

-Best tasting coffee you'll ever have at home, period.
-Strong, full bodied flavor
-Pretty easy to prepare
-Impress your friends with your snobby european coffee-making ways:)(looks good on your counter too)
-Great for making small amounts of coffee, for one or two people.
-Priced about the same as a ho-hum auto drip coffee maker with noextra bells and whistles, yet makes coffee a million times better.
Cons:

-More cleanup than using a automatic drip maker
-No heating element to keep coffee warm.Use a thermos/carafe if you want to sip several cups over a few hours.
- 8-cup capacity is based on a 4oz beverage size. Not really a "con" but something you should be aware of.If you had a large group you were making coffee for, it might get a little tedious to be constantly making a fresh batch of coffee.

Couple other notes:Coarsely ground coffee is recommended. This is no problem for people that already buy whole bean and grind their own, but it will be an extra step for some people. Also, I recommend picking up an Aerolatte milk frother if you want to make truly effortless cappuchino.I find that there's plenty of time to warm some milk in the microwave and froth it up while the coffee brews for 4 mintues. A $20 Aerolatte milk frother + $24 french press = coffeehouse coffee at home, whenever you want it.That's really a tiny investment for coffeehouse quality java!

I also purchased a smaller 1-cup Bodum press to take to work.Tomorrow I plan to smile smugly while my co-workers chug down the crap that comes out of the Bunn machine. If my boss is really nice, I may let him use it too.Maybe.

Product Description:
Brewing a perfect cup of coffee is easy with the Chambord coffee press.Just add one scoop per cup of water, add hot water, wait 4 minutes, then press and enjoy.Pressed coffee is measured in European cup sizes, so the 4-cup press brews four 4-ounce cups of coffee, or about a mug and a half.Perfect for home or office, the Chambord 4-cup press makes brewing simple and easy.To clean up, just compost the grounds or dump them in the garbage and rinse the press. The entire unit is dishwasher-safe and the parts are replaceable.Press coffee is accepted around the world as one of the best ways to brew coffee because there are no paper filters to soak up the essential oils that provide the balance and flavor. In addition, the press combines excellent surface-area contact between coffee and hot water, producing the best extraction process. The key ingredients of a good cup of coffee are freshly roasted coffee that has been freshly ground, surface-area contact with water that is just off of a boil to maximize the extraction process, and contact time, to allow the extraction to complete. The Chambord coffee press meets all of these requirements, and the entire brewing process is quick and easy, yielding a balanced and flavorful cup of coffee time after time.

Bodum YoYo 13-Ounce Tea Infuser Set Review

Bodum YoYo 13-Ounce Tea Infuser SetThis is a nice quality cup and infuser -- it's sturdy and comfortable. The infuser is resistant to staining and the little lid that is used to keep the heat in when steeping can be turned upside-down to act as a holder for the wet infuser when you remove it from the tea.

However, there are some problems. My main complaint is the design of the infuser. The sides are a nice, fine mesh whereas the bottom is plastic with some perforations. These holes in the bottom allow small leaf bits to flow-out.I have a Teeli infuser that has the mesh in the bottom also and it keeps all of the leaves contained.Second, and far more minor, the cup is rather small. It makes a nicely sized cup of tea, but if you're used to drinking from larger cups and mugs, you will find yourself gulping this one down pretty quickly.

Overall, this is not a bad product and if it had the full mesh infuser, I would have given it 4 stars.

Braun WK600 Impressions 7-Cup Electric Kettle, Brushed Stainless Steel Review

Braun WK600 Impressions 7-Cup Electric Kettle, Brushed Stainless SteelI was a little surprised at the price but found that it is worth it.It is built very sturdy and does what it was made to.The stainless steel looks great and is very sleek. One thing though... GETS VERY HOT, but as long as you use the handle you will be fine.I really like that it came with a filter in it and has the automatic turn off when it reaches the appropriate temperature. If you're willing to pay $69+ for a water heater you will not be disappointed.

Chef's Choice 678 Cordless Electric Kettle Review

Chef's Choice 678 Cordless Electric KettleI like this product and I use it nearly every day - it goes well with a french press, and heating water to 200 deg F is its primary function. At other times I used it to help a large pot of water (for cooking pasta) come to a boil much sooner.

Things to note:
- The brushed exterior is convenient, it doesn't pick up smudges like a polished one would

- The 2qt capacity is great when boiling water for a larger pot

- It's fast. It gets water to a boil very quickly, especially if you don't fill the whole pot - 1qt will boil really quickly, not just in half the time of 2qts

- The indicator window gets steamed and is barely of use. OK, I see how much to not fill it (Max line)

- The switch appears flimsy but there's not much to stress it

- A subtle red light indicates the switch is on. Initially I used to leave the switch on after pouring out the water, but now I know what to look for. At this point I don't regret that it could have been brighter, because it stays subtle in the kitchen. In a multi-user kitchen you might want to mention that the ON indication is very low-key.

- When boiling, the kettle takes a bit more delay than I'd expect to switch off and indicate the water's boiling (with a quiet click). By that time the sound of bubbling alerts me

- I haven't detected any weird smell, I did two boils with fresh water before using it

- The spout is definitely designed for slow pouring. It doesn't spill a drop. However, if you're trying to dump the water out really fast, like into a large pot, slow down or you'll get a trickle down the sides because the spout won't handle the volume

- There's a fine mesh filter across the spout to catch any scaling if it ever occurs (not seen it yet but I have an undersink filter) and I remove that to stick a thermometer to catch it short of boiling. Would have been nice to get something where I could simply set the temperature rather than monitor the kettle - but that would be a different product altogether.

- The lid is nice, opens gently

- I wondered whether I could heat vegetable stock in it, but I think that better be left to the 670 or 675 that you see on Good Eats - the electric hot pot that looks like a kettle but with perfectly vertical sides. This has a tube in it and its shape won't lend well to thorough cleaning. I'll stick to water.

- It feels like it sits loose on the base, but that's what makes it easy to pick up and put down. The base doesn't get lifted with the kettle, so it's nice in that. The cord is solid and has a three-pronged plug at the end.

All in all, it feels solid and can do what it's supposed to do. I fault it a star for trickling when I try to pour the water very quickly, and for the odd placing of the level indicator, the difficulty of being able to reach in and deep clean anything. I'd probably give it 4 1/2 stars if that was possible.

Proctor Silex K2070 1-Quart Automatic Electric Kettle, White Review

Proctor Silex K2070 1-Quart Automatic Electric Kettle, WhiteI bought this kettle for the sole purpose of making tea in my dorm room. For that it works great. Just put in some water and flip the switch (a handy light comes on to notify you that the kettle is in use). When the water's done boiling the kettle really does shut itself off. One other nice thing is that the cable that you use to plug this kettle into the outlet actually does detach (AC adapter style). This allows to you to use this as a pitcher, rather than keeping it plugged in all the time. The only real problem (hence the minus one star) is that you have to really make the sure the top is sealed because it doesn't seal tightly by itself. One thing to note, this uses a submerged coil to boil the water meaning that you must boil at least 1.5 cups of water in order for it to work.
